Аммиан Марцеллин и античная географическая традиция о Европе

Abstract

Статья М. Рубцовой «Аммиан Марцеллин и античная географическая традиция о Европе» посвящена проблеме обращения Аммиана Марцеллина к греко-римской географической традиции с точки зрения особенностей использования географического материала в «Res Gestae». В историографии существует два основных мнения о географических путешествиях Аммиана. Некоторые ученые относят их к типу курьезов, другие считают, что эти экскурсии являются органичной частью исторического труда Аммиана. Анализ отчетов Аммиана о европейских территориях позволяет сделать следующие выводы. Эти описания в основном соответствуют общей идее «Res Gestae». Аммиан не просто следует географической традиции, но и преобразует ее, выбирая нужные ему факты. Это придает некоторую специфику традиционным географическим представлениям. Во-первых, территория Рима строго отделена от барбарикума, а территориальное деление Европы основано на административно-политическом делении Римской империи времен Аммиана. Во-вторых, Аммиан выбирает факты практического применения, которые помогают историку конкретизировать описываемые события или высказать собственное мнение о проблемах Римской империи IV века.

The article «Ammianus Marcellinus and the Ancient Geographical Tradition on Europe» of M. Rubtsova is devoted to the problem of the Ammianus Marcellinus’ appeals to the Greek-Roman geographical tradition from the point of peculiarities of using the geographical material in the «Res Gestae». There are two main opinions in the historiography on the Ammianus’ geographical excurses. Some scholars refer them to the type of curiositas, another consider that this excurses are organical part of the historical work of Ammianus. Analysis of the Ammianus’ reports on European territories allows to make the following conclusions. This descriptions mostly submit to the general idea of the «Res Gestae». Ammianus not just follows the geographical tradition, but converts it, choosing the facts he needs. It gives some specific character to the traditional geographical ideas. Firstly, the roman territory is strictly separated from barbaricum and territory division of Europe bases on the administrative – political division of the Roman Empire, contemporary to Ammianus. Secondly, Ammianus chooses the facts of the practical usage, which help the historian to give concrete expression to the describing events or to convey his own opinion on the problems of the IV-th century Roman Empire.
