The article contains a critique of the current state of such a discipline as theory and history of ideas. Orthodox research in the field of theory and the history of ideas is contrasted with modern social research on the connections between the rational and the social. The article substantiates the need for changes in the research practices of this discipline to avoid two typical conceptual traps – epiphenomenalism and reductionism. Special attention is paid to the sources and agents of orthodoxy's influence on the research practices of modern theory and the history of ideas. In particular, the research practices of 19th-century German classical philology (Klassische Philologie) are considered in detail, which have gained wide academic recognition due to the activities of such influential schools as Gottfried Hermann's philology of words (Wortphilologie) and August Beck's philology of things (Sachphilologie). It was these research practices that became a tool for the expansion of philology in the 19th century in neighboring disciplines, and above all in the territories occupied by representatives of history. The active adoption of these practices and the creation of philology-dependent research associations in cross-border disciplinary fields influenced the formation of an Orthodox research canon in the theory and history of ideas. This influence turned out to be so large-scale and significant that even after philology left the world scientific scene at the very beginning of the 20th century, traces of this influence can be found in the research practices of many modern disciplinary programs of theory and history of ideas (in particular, the history of ideas by A. Lovejoy, the school of Annals by L. Fevre, the Cambridge School of History by K. Skinner and J. Pocock, R. Kozellek's social history of concepts). The article concludes with a brief overview of some of the most promising areas for the development of an unorthodox and more socially oriented theory and history of ideas.
