The article is devoted to the identification of the role of historical experience in social existence. The author identifies three types of perception of historical experience: historical idealism, historical nihilism, and historical realism. The proposed typological triad is considered as a tool for analyzing public consciousness, and the degree of development of a realistic attitude to historical experience is considered as an indicator of a society's ability to self–develop. The author concludes that there is a shortage of historical realism in modern Russian society.
