Образ Запада в представлениях русских западников

Abstract

Исследуется понимание русскими западниками специфики западного общества, для чего анализируются и обобщаются описания и философские высказывания ключевых представителей этого течения. Обосновывается, что они игнорировали ключевой аспект западного опыта, его фундированность индивидуализмом и доминированием частного интереса, поэтому в своей реконструкции данного опыта русские западники фактически подменяли его.

The article studies the Russian Westernizers’ understanding of the Western society; the aim of the current research is to find a ‘defect’ of such an understanding that undermines the results of implementing the Western practices in Russia. Scrutiny of the source texts reveals that the Westernizers understood the essence of Western civilization as different forms of material and spiritual well-being sustaining a comfortable and fruitful life. At the same time they criticized the West of their day for individualism, exaggerated personal freedom and private interest; they considered these facets as insignificant for a civilized life, and thought a better alternative for it is action aimed at the common good taken most often by the state. Their acute dislike towards this particular aspect of the Western life shows that this was a sensitive topic for the Russian thinkers; while the wish to substitute it when implementing the Western practices in Russia is the defect of the Russian Westernizers’ idea of the West.
