Les trois voleurs de Tolstoï

Abstract

Leo Tolstoy’s tales, short stories, and fables appeal to many of us with their humor, their cold view of the realities of life, and their ignorance of the demands of conformist morality. For a number of reasons, one of the tales, entitled Three Thieves, led the author of this article to thinking about the discrepancy between the tale and the quaint preface that one must read before taking up the book, published by Leo Tolstoy in 1888 in the Plon-Paris publishing house. In the first part of this article, the author confines to a semi-linguistic approach to the tale in order to determine what might be called its “general meaning”. In the second part, the author studies what Leo Tolstoy really had in mind when he wrote this tale. A discussion whether this tale does not contradict the preface given earlier follows then. The conclusion once again confirms a positive answer to this question.

Lisant les Contes, récits et fables de Tolstoï, de nombreux textes nous séduisirent par leur humour, leur vision froide des réalités de la vie, leur ignorance des exigences d’une morale conformiste. Pour différentes raisons l’un d’entre eux, Les trois voleurs, nous amena à nous interroger sur la distorsion qu’il y avait entre ces contes et la préface bizarre, Pour être lu avant le livre, dont Tolstoï les affubla à partir de 1888 dans l’édition de la Librairie Plon-Paris. Dans une première partie nous nous contentons de faire une approche sémio-linguistique du conte pour en dégager ce que l’on pourrait appeler sa « signification générale ». Dans la seconde partie nous nous interrogeons sur ce que Tolstoï a voulu vraiment dire en écrivant ce conte. Nous nous demandons alors si le Tolstoï auteur de ce conte n’est pas en contradiction avec le Tolstoï auteur de la préface surajoutée. Notre conclusion va dans le sens d’une réponse affirmative à cette question.

Читая сказки, рассказы и басни Льва Толстого, многие произведения привлекали нас своим юмором, холодным взглядом на реалии жизни, а также незнанием требований конформистской морали. По ряду причин, одна из сказок, под названием «Три вора», заставила нас задуматься о несоответствии, которое было между этой сказкой и причудливым предисловием, которое нужно прочитать перед тем, как взяться за книгу, опубликованную Л. Толстым в 1888 г. в издании «Librairie Plon-Paris». В первой части мы ограничиваемся полулингвистическим подходом к сказке, чтобы определить то, что можно было бы назвать ее «общим смыслом». Во второй части мы задаемся вопросом, что на самом деле имел в виду Л. Толстой, когда писал эту сказку. Затем мы задаемся вопросом, не противоречит ли эта сказка приведенному ранее предисловию. Вывод, сделанный нами, лишний раз подтверждает положительный ответ на этот вопрос.
